Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a complex syndrome resulting in debilitating pain and fatigue. Its predominant symptom is pain in the fibrous tissues, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Science has recognized fibromyalgia as a rheumatic autoimmune disorder, whereby the following two criteria must be met for a diagnosis of fibromyalgia: widespread musculoskeletal pain in all four quadrants of the body for at least three months duration, in combination with tenderness at 11 or more of the 18 specific “tender point” sites. Other general, common symptoms include aching, disturbed sleep patterns, fatigue, morning stiffness, depression, recurrent headaches, tender lymph nodes, bowel or bladder disturbances, sensitivity to heat or cold, anxiety, gastrointestinal disturbances, dizziness, occasional racing heart beats, decreased coordination, and environmental allergies.

Supplement Considerations

High Potency Multiple Vitamin and Mineral

A high potency multiple vitamin & mineral should contain important dosages of antioxidants, B-vitamins and minerals that assist the essential fatty acids in synthesizing anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving prostaglandin hormones.

Essential Fatty Acids

An essential fatty acid should contain the perfect complement of essential fatty acids that boost the production of anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving prostaglandin hormones .

Natural Anti-Inflammatory Herbs

A natural anti-inflammatory herb should contain the four most powerful anti-inflammatory herbs that have been shown to be effective in human clinical trials.

Natural Sleep Aid Nutrients

A natural sleep aid should contain natural agents that raise brain levels of serotonin (often diminished in fibromyalgia patients) and provides patients with a better, more renewing night’s sleep.

Digestive Enzymes and Prebiotics

Digestive enzymes and probiotics should contain a full complement of digestive enzymes, as well as prebiotics. Many fibromyalgia patients also have digestive problems or irritable bowel syndrome complaints that can be reduced significantly with supplementation of digestive enzymes and prebiotics. These nutrients improve the function of the small and large intestine, as well as the gut immune function.

Coenzyme Q10 and Hawthorn Supplement

A coenzyme Q10 and hawthorn supplement should work synergistically to boost energy production at the cellular level. This is most important for those over 40 years of age who have fibromyalgia.

Adrenal Support Nutrients

An adrenal support nutrient should contain natural adaptogens, which suppress the over secretion of cortisol from the adrenal glands when a person is under stress. Individuals with fibromyalgia often show high cortisol levels or an abnormal cortisol secretion pattern, which weakens the immune system and promotes the inflammatory process. Adrenal support  nutrients help to reverse the effects of stress on the body, allowing individuals to feel more energized and combat many symptoms associated with fatigue and muscle soreness, due to inflammation.

Additional Supplement Considerations

Probiotics

1-2 capsules per day of a potent probiotic supplement
