Adrenal Fatigue

Adrenal stress, also known as adrenal fatigue, typically occurs with frequent, persistent or severe physical, mental or emotional stress. The adrenals are a pair of glands that rest on top of the kidneys. They regulate the hormones that deal with stress and energy production. These hormones send messages to the brain, the heart, muscles and other organs in the body. When these glands are functioning normally, stress response is normal and healthy. When the adrenals are functioning below the necessary level or in an exhaustive state, stress of any kind can feel overwhelming and difficult to recover. Feelings of prolonged fatigue not relieved by sleep, symptoms such as weakness, lethargy, dizziness, headaches, memory problems, moodiness, and blood sugar disorders are common. People with adrenal fatigue may use coffee, tea, cola or other stimulants to get going in the morning or to prop them up during the day.

Supplement Considerations

High Potency Multiple Vitamin and Mineral

A high potency multiple vitamin and mineral should provide boosted levels of antioxidants, a B-50 complex, 200 mg of magnesium – all of which are nutrients utilized more rapidly during periods of acute and chronic stress.

Adrenal Support Nutrients

An adrenal support nutrient should contain adaptogen herbs that decrease the release of cortisol from the adrenal glands, and help minimize the impact of stress on the brain and other organs. This formulation helps to sustain energy, endurance and concentration ability for individuals under chronic stress, and supports adrenal gland function.

Thyroid Support Nutrients

A thyroid support nutrient should contain nutrients required to synthesize thyroid hormone within the thyroid gland, as well as factors that stimulate increased release of thyroid hormone into the bloodstream. Other ingredients in this product help to convert T4 into the more active T3 thyroid hormone. In cases of chronic stress the adrenal glands release high levels of cortisol into the bloodstream, which can impair thyroid hormone synthesis and block the effects of thyroid hormone within body cells. Thus, taking an adrenal support supplement, in conjunction with a thyroid support supplement, is often helpful for individuals who struggle with a slower metabolism and weight gain that is aggravated by stress.

Chelated Iron Supplement
A chelated iron supplement should contain a form of chelated, highly bioavailable iron that is non-constipating. When fatigue accompanies chronic stress it is important to evaluate blood levels of iron (serum ferritin), as part of the health assessment profile. Chelated iron supplements should also contain nutrients that support red blood cell and hemoglobin production.
