Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a slowly progressive, degenerative condition in which the myelin sheaths surrounding nerves in the brain and spinal cord are destroyed. Myelin sheaths are a type of insulation tissue around nerve fibers. They protect nerves and are required for effective transmission of nerve impulses. The most common symptoms are numbness and tingling in the extremities, trunk, or on one side of the face. Muscle weakness, loss of coordination of a leg or hand, and visual disturbances (such as partial blindness in one eye, dim vision, or double vision) are also common. Limbs that fatigue easily, difficulty in walking, difficulty with bladder control, vertigo and mood disturbances may appear years before MS is diagnosed. The course of the disease is highly varied and unpredictable. In most people, the disease remits for varying periods of time. There is some evidence that following a low fat diet early in the disease can slow its progression and decrease frequency of symptoms.
Supplement Considerations
High Potency Multiple Vitamin and Mineral
A high potency multiple vitamin and mineral should contain boosted levels of key vitamins and minerals required to support nerve myelination and suppress free radical damage – two important concerns in the progression of this disease.
An essential fatty acid should contain the perfect blend of essential oils that help support nerve function and reduce inflammation – two important considerations in this disease.
Nutrients Enhancing Glutathione
A nutrients enhancing glutathione should contain nutrients that are shown to support nerve function and enhance cellular levels of glutathione – an important cellular antioxidant and detoxification agent.
Additional Comments:
There is no known highly effective nutrition or natural medicine protocol for the management of MS. The suggestions above are intended as supportive measures.
